Last week I spoke about developing a vision, goals, objectives, and an action plan for the implementation of the revised texts of The Roman Missal. The way the plan is carried out, and by whom, will have a significant impact on how the new texts are received in a parish.
As I’ve mentioned at other times, the catechesis and formation that we do in preparation for the reception of the new texts should really go beyond the words themselves. Our focus needs to be on the entire liturgy, and how the liturgy helps us to encounter the living Christ.
According to Father Richard Hilgartner, executive director of the Secretariat on Divine Worship of the USCCB, if we focus just on the words, they become an idol in themselves. There will be a phase, in the weeks immediately following the date of implementation, when we will be focusing on the new words of our prayer, but eventually the words will become comfortable and we will again be able to experience them in a balanced way in the context of the entire...
